What should we practice?

We all know the value of practicing. If we want to learn more about riding a bike we have to practice riding it. Every time we ride there is some sort of change in things like terrain, weather, traffic, you name it. Each time we ride, even if it’s the same bike all the time, is a new experience or a first time, because of these changes. What happens when we ride for the first time?…we develop some trust and a little faith we could do it again. Each ride produces more trust, more faith and more joy. If we were in a math class at school though, a bike would be a poor choice to practice on. If we want to learn ( develop trust and faith) about anything it seems we need to be doing the very thing we want to learn about. If we want to learn math we must practice using numbers and their rules as often as possible and in as many examples as possible, aka homework.

If we are going to develop trust and faith in the Word of God, guess what we will need to do? PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! What should we pratice with though? The Bible tells us all scripture is good for proving all sorts of things so we could practice with any of it, or all of it. Lets keep in mind though, that we want to use the same method of learning we used to learn math, reading, writing, cooking, swimming…in other words we want to learn how to use God’s word the same way we learned to use everything else, the familiar way, the way we know we learn best. With math all of mankind has developed incredible trust and faith, so it makes sense to use the same teaching method to develop our trust and faith in the Word of God. Let’s identify some of the characteristics of teaching math.

Start with simple examples that can be repeated quickly and easily, such as adding anything to find a sum. The numbers are used each time in a new situation, over and over again, building trust and faith in using the numbers and their rules.

So, to begin trusting His Word we need to be able to use a scripture in a way that we can use it for everything, the same way we can count anything using numbers and following the rules. So, what scripture fits? We don’t want to learn all the scriptures at once anymore than we would want to learn all of math at once. We need a good starting scripture. It should be easy to use, provide answers that are clearly seen as better or worse, good or bad, answers we know are true and trustworthy; the kind we begin to trust and have faith in.

Does it seem possible to you that we can begin to trust and have faith in the Word of God, as much as we do with math if we use the same teaching method and principles as we do for math? Does it seem possible for all of mankind to eventually begin to trust and have faith like mankind does for math? I believe we could…if we wanted to.
